Collection contains correspondence, the next to the last draft of "Arlin Turner, 1909-1980," and a checklist of "The Published Writings of Willard Thorp," compiled by Steven V. Justice and autographed by Thorp. Following Dr. Arlin Turner's death in 1980, Prof. Oliver W. Ferguson, editor of the "South Atlantic Quarterly," asked Thorp to write a tribute to Turner for the journal. These papers mainly relate to the preparation of that tribute. Correspondents include Thelma (Mrs. Arlin) Turner, Prof. John McElroy, and Ferguson. This collection is part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for American Literary Historiography.

Born in Abilene, Texas, Arlin Turner received his B.A. from West Texas State University in 1927 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1930 and 1934, respectively. He joined the English Department at Duke University in 1953 and served until 1979. He was department chair from 1958-1964. Turner specialized in American literature, writing on Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain and other Southern humorists.
